Nycticorax nycticorax

Black-crowned Night-Heron

The Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is a stocky heron with primarily crepuscular and nocturnal habits. It is distinguished by its black crown and back, which contrast with its gray wings and pale underparts. It features striking ruby-red eyes and, during the breeding season, grows two or three long white plumes from the back of its head. Unlike many other herons, it has a shorter, thicker neck that it often keeps tucked in. An opportunistic hunter, it inhabits various wetlands, where it remains motionless while waiting to prey on fish, crustaceans, and amphibians.
