It is a striking tanager with a brilliant blue head contrasting with a deep purplish throat, black body, and shimmering golden-green wing coverts. It inhabits humid montane and foothill forest edges, clearings, and secondary growth. Usually seen in pairs or accompanying mixed-species foraging flocks through the canopy and subcanopy.
