Grallaria ruficapilla

Chestnut-crowned Antpitta

The Chestnut-crowned Antpitta (Grallaria ruficapilla) is one of the most familiar and conspicuous members of the Grallariidae family in the Colombian Andes. Featuring a plump body, long legs, and a very short tail, it is easily recognized by its bright chestnut-rufous crown and nape, which contrasts with an olive-gray back and white underparts heavily streaked with dark brown. Unlike many of its secretive relatives, this antpitta is relatively tolerant of habitat disturbance, occupying the understory of montane forests, forest edges, and second-growth scrub at elevations between 1,200 and 3,200 meters. It forages primarily on the ground for earthworms, spiders, and insects.
