Diglossa sittoides

Rusty Flowerpiercer

The Rusty Flowerpiercer (Diglossa sittoides) is a small, active bird of the Thraupidae family, widely distributed across the montane regions of the Colombian Andes. The male is characterized by its bluish-gray upperparts contrasting with a warm cinnamon breast and belly, while the female has duller olive-brown tones. Its most unique feature is its stout, upturned bill with a hooked tip, which it uses to pierce the base of tubular flowers to rob nectar without pollinating. It inhabits Andean shrublands, humid forest edges, and gardens at elevations between 1,300 and 3,400 meters.
